4am and Portrait Testing

Set the alarm for 4am, got ready and out the door for a portrait test I wanted to do in Upstate NY. Got in touch with a hunting club and photographed some of the members during their ice fishing excursion. Other then the freezing temperatures, the constant rain and protecting all my gear, it was a great shoot.

Ogilvy + Coca Cola + cherry pickers + hanging a $65K camera

Just wrapped a fun ad project for Ogilvy and Coca Cola, details are hush hush, but images up soon! We had 2 cherry pickers on set, had to suspend a Phase One p65+ back 30 something feet in the air, and I had to get over my fear of heights.

The cherry picker operator gave us a 5 minute tutorial on how to operate everything then left us to figure everything else out.

That's what hanging a 65K camera 30 feet in the air looks like. And I still get nervous thinking about rigging that thing.

Kids of Kathmandu + Nepal

Back in July 2012, I found myself in Nepal, and had the amazing opportunity to do some pro-bono work for the organization, Kid of Kathmandu.

I ended up spending several days at an orphanage near Bhaktapur, Nepal and basically just hung out with all the kids, while photographing them as much as possible. One of the biggest challenges of doing something like this was there was no specific art direction, I was simply asked to make “great images”. I was in a completely foreign land by myself with the intentions of making the best images possible.

Every evening after spending a long day photographing at the orphanage, I would go through the day’s images over dinner. I remember always saying to myself, “keep the images honest.”

So this one time in Burma (Myanmar)…

I was doing an image search for a client when I came across these.

In the summer of 2009, I found myself traveling through Burma. I was at this beautiful area called Inle Lake. I was having lunch in this very small restaurant which happened to be the back of this guys house. Me and this guy started talking about music, how he loves American metal and playing guitar loud…

Long story short, the next day I find myself riding on a motorocycle with 2 other guys (3 of us a motorcycle, sounds crowded, but completely normal in SE Asia) I’m holding a guitar in each hand, and we are flying down dirt roads through a small village. We get to a small concrete hut where a bunch of these Burmese guys get together and play loud loud music. There is a stick for a mic stand, and drink caps to hold the drum cymbals down. But these guys absolutely rocked and just wanted to have fun. My type of dudes. Just one of those random moments that turned into great experiences.

The electricity in Burma is so so, meaning they get rolling blackouts all the time, and the electricity is never stable. This thing with all these plugs and electricity running through it is much more frightening when you're standing next to it.
